Lower Paleogene suites in Azerbaijan: stratigraphy and correlation
Bagmanov M.A.
Paleocene-Eocene deposits
in the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan, central part of the Lesser Caucasus,
Talysh and South-East Caucasus strongly differ by their depositional
environment and lithology. They are also easily recognized in the field from
underlying and overlying deposits by the color and lithological composition.
One of the peculiarities of
Eocene series in the Lesser Caucasus and Talysh is a presence in the section
thick volcanic deposits, which differentiates them from synchronous deposits in
the South-East Caucasus where flish formations are widely occur.
Another problem is that in
the different regions a volume of the stratigrafic units is different,
corresponding to either several stages or to part of the stage.
In this
paper two new suites have been determined – Daridag and Gilycmchay Suites, as
well as all suites are subdivided into stages and correlated based on the new
stratigraphic scheme for the first time.
